Healthcare expenditure as a share of gross domestic product in Belgium 1980-2022

Total expenditure on health as a share of gross domestic product (GDP) in Belgium amounted to 10.9 percent in 2022, a slight decrease on the previous year. In every year since 2009, Belgium has spent over 10 percent of its GDP on health.  

Health expenditure in Belgium compared to Europe

In comparison to other European countries in 2019, Belgium was fairly high in terms of health spending as a share of GDP. Top of the list was Switzerland, which spent 12.1 percent of its’ GDP on healthcare in this year. While Germany and France both spent over eleven percent on health.

Trend of healthcare workers in Belgium 

In 2018, there were approximately 633 thousand employees in the health and social care industry in Belgium, this increased by over two hundred thousand since 2000. While in the period since 2004 the number of practicing nurses in Belgium has increased by more than a third to over 127 thousand in 2017.
